Leningrad region (Leningradskaya Oblast) is situated in the northwest of Russia.
The region borders on Novgorod and Pskov regions in the south,
Estonia in the west, Finland in the northwest, the Republic of Karelia in the
north, and Vologda region in the east. The region is washed by the Gulf of Finland,
the Baltic Sea. The biggest European lake is in Leningrad region.
It is Lake Ladoga. The climate is mild, the average temperature in July is 19
degrees centigrade. The area of the region is 85,9 thousand square kilometers.
The total population is 1763 thousand people (according to the data of 01.10.2002).
Leningrad region is an interesting combination of wild forests and highly developed
and industrialized territories.
Though Saint-Petersburg is a separate subject of the Russian federation,
geographically it is located in the center of Leningrad region.
Staraya Ladoga
Staraya Ladoga is a small village in Leningrad region with long
and great history. It was first mentioned in the chronicles in the year of 862.
The main sight of the place is the old fortress, which stands on the bank of the Volkhov river.
Tikhvin
This is one of the oldest towns in the Northwest of Russia. It was founded in 1383.
The town of Tikhvin is famous for its Men's Monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin.
Aleksandro-Svirsky Monastery
This monastery is famous for its beautiful surroundings, churches and interesting history.
It was founded by the Reverend Aleksandr Svirsky at the beginning of the 16th century.
Mandrogi Village
Verkhnie mandrogi is a reconstructed traditional Russian village, where you find traditional Russian
houses (izba) and participate in differen intresting and exciting activities.
Vyborg
Vyborg is located in Leningrad region on the Karelian Isthmus near the Bay of Vyborg at the distance of 130 km to the northwest of
St. Petersburg close to the Russian border with Finland.
The historical centre of the town is formed by the Castle of Vyborg and other historical buildings of different architectural styles.
