Fishing has always been a popular activity in Russia. In Karelia - the land of thousands of lakes -
fishing played an important role in the pastime of local people. Though even nowadays some people fish for food,
sport fishing is more popular.
The following fish species can be caught in the lakes and rivers of Karelia:
grayling, trout, salmon, perch, roach, pike, pike-perch, etc. Among big lakes the best catch is on Pyaozero
Lake near Paanajarvi National Park and Lake Onego.
Spinning is the most widespread sport fishing method among Russians,
though trolling and fly-fishing are getting more common. Perch and other small fishes can be caught with a simple fishing rod.
In winter ice-fishing is very popular. Many local men and also some women like to spend their weekends on ice.
