Paanajarvi National Park. Kivakka Mountain The main landscape type of the Region is taiga, though in the Northwest of Karelia there are some low mountains. On condition that travellers stay outside of the cities there are plenty of opportunities to go hiking. The most attractive places for this type of activity can be the Solovetsky Islands and the National Park of Paanajarvi.

Solovetsky Island is an interesting place where travellers may walk along old monastery roads and paths visiting different sights of the island.

The National Park of Paanajarvi is located in the north of Karelia. Unlike other territories of the republic there are mountains in the park. They are not high and this gives the travellers a chance to climb to the top in order to enjoy magnificent views. The most interesting and visited places are the mountain Kivakka in the summer and Nuorunen in the winter. One can hike to the Kivakkakoski Cascade on the Olanga River or take an ecological trail through the forests and marshes of the Park.
