Karelia is a republic within the Russian Federation. It is located in the Northwest Russia, not far from St. Petersburg and Moscow. It has a long border with Finland on the west, the White Sea, Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions on the east and south, Leningrad region on the south and Murmansk region on the north.
The population of the republic is about 767 thousand people, the area is 180,5 thousand square km, the maximum extension from south to north is 672 km, from west to east it makes 324 km. There are more than 60 thousand lakes and 27 thousand rivers.
Major industries are: wood processing, pulp and paper industry, stone industry, engineering industry, trade, tourism.
