Skiing As Karelia is located in the north winters are snowy and cold, though in recent years the winters have been warmer than usual, may be due to global warming. Cross-country skiing is one of the most favourite pastimes of the local people. The skiing season usually starts at the beginning of December and lasts till the end of March.
Due to the lack of infrastructure and high hills downhill skiing is not developed, though they are planning to build two resorts on higher places near Petrozavodsk.

There are cross-country skiing routes near Petrozavodsk and in the countryside. Beginners can try themselves on short trips while experienced skiers can cover 20 km and more per day.
