
The Russian Museum is one of the most famous museums in Russia. It was founded in
April of 1895 by the emperor Nicholas II as a museum of art,
culture and history.
The collection of the Museum was based upon the paintings from the Hermitage
and some palaces. In 1902 the ethnographical department was created in the Museum.
After the revolution of 1917 the collection became larger due to the nationalization of
private art collections.
In 1975 the collection numbered more than 316000 exhibits,
45 times more comparing with the year of 1917.
Today the collection contains paintings
of many Russian artists. The Museum has got its branches different places of St. Petersburg.
The main building of the Museum is located in the Mikhailovsky Palace,
a splendid Neoclassical residence of
Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich, constructed in 1819-25 by Carlo Rossi in the Art Square.
Opening hours:
From 10:00 till 18:00, on Monday from 10:00 till 17:00, closed on Tuesday.
