Vologda region is situated in the northwest of Russia.
The first settlements were founded along the Mologa and Sukhona rivers
in the 9th century.
After the foundation of the Russian
kingdom Vologda region was the biggest part of the state.
The tzar Ivan the Terrible even wanted to move the capital of the
country to Vologda.
Peter the Great favoured greatly the industrial development of Russia.
In 1703 two metal working plants were commissioned in the region.
The square of the region is 145,7 thousand square kilometers.
It borders on Arkhangelsk region in the north, on Kirovsk
region in the east, on Kostroma and Yaroslavl regions in the south, on Tver
and Novgorod regions in the southwest, on Leningrad region in the west
and on the Republic of Karelia in the northwest.
The main branches of industry are ferrous metallurgy,
chemical industry, machine-building, metal-processing,
forest industry and pulp and
paper industry. The main cities are Vologda (about 295.000 inhabitants)
and Cherepovets (about 311.000 inhabitants).
Vologda
Vologda is the capital of the region. It was first mentioned in the
chronicles in 1147.
Kirillov
The town of Kirillov stands on the banks of Lake Siverskoye.
This town is famous all over the world because of its St. Kirill Belozersky Monastery.
Ferapontov Monastery
The monastery was founded in 1398. The museum of Dionisy's frescoes was established in the monastery in 1975.
The monastery is included into the world heritage list of UNESCO.
National Park "Russian North"
It was created on the territory of Kirillovsky district on March 20,
1992 in order to preserve the unique natural and cultural
complexes of the territory and to use it in
recreational and scietific purposes.
